The Capital city of Tabasco in Mexico, Villahermosa is famous for its colourful scenery and vegetation, helped in part by its location on the banks of the Rio Grijalva (Grijalva River). As a city it is in Central Mexico as opposed to on the coast, although it's situated in the Yucatan Peninsula area (famous for the Riviera Maya stretch of coastline) and close to a variety of attractions and ancient sites. Villahermosa is a modern City, with a number of hotels to choose from and things to do if holidaying here or stopping for a few days. It is a particularly popular place to stay for tourists wanting to visit the famous ancient Mayan ruins of Palenque. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Palenque is a large archeological site, built in a tropical jungle area, which includes stunning temples and buildings from Mayan civilisation. Visit the Temple of the Sun, The Palace and the mysterious Temple of Inscriptions amongst others.
Villahermosa is popular for holidays partly because of its proximity to Palenque but also because it is situated in the midst of many tourist routes that make their way along the Mexico coast and the central Mexico area. Why not follow the magical 'Chocolate Route' which travels through old cacao plantations aswell as archeological sites, lagoons and beaches, whilst you enjoy the taste and aroma of chocolate! Here you can learn how Cacao is transformed into chocolate and experience the traditional processes that bring this food to life. Once you're full up on chocolate, head off to a nearby beach to relax. Although Villahermosa is not on the coast, the nearest beach is only about an hour's or so drive away - try Vicente Guerrero or Paraiso if you want to go to the coast. Villahermosa itself offers everything a modern City should offer with a wide choice of restuarants and different cuisines aswell as its share of clubs, live music, cafes and bars. If you fancy something different, why not try one of the organised evening boat trips along the river from the Grijalva River pier, giving a great view of Villahermosa's attractions such as the Anthropology Museum, whilst sipping on a drink. Or make your way along the Zona Luz along the riverfront where you'll find eateries, bars and shops.
Villahermos's climate is a tropical monsoon climate and can be very hot (over 40C at times) in the Spring and Summer seasons. Winter is cooler (28C) but still humid. February, March and April see less rainfall in the City, and Spring can often be a good time to go as the vegetation here is in full bloom and Villahermosa is bathed in stunning colours from the tropical flowers here.
